Margaret Ann (Austin) Gunnett, 92, of Elkhart, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2026, surrounded by her loving family at The Waters of Wakarusa, following a period of declining health.
Margaret was born on March 23, 1934, in Mishawaka, Indiana, to the late Arthur and Florence (Crain) Klein. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Coye Austin; her second husband, William “Bill” Gunnett; her sons, Ron Austin; her daughter-in-law, Karen Austin; her grandson, Marc Mills; her granddaughter, Kristie (Austin) Cliff, her great-granddaughter, Karen Suzanne Austin, her sisters, Dakres L. Bickel and Mary Caspel; and her brothers, Arthur “Butch” Klein Jr. and William Klein.
Margaret married Coye Austin on July 3, 1950, in Iuka, Mississippi. He preceded her in death on March 16, 2009. She later found companionship again and married William “Bill” Gunnett on February 26, 2015.
A graduate of Mishawaka High School, Margaret worked as a cook at the former St. Joseph Hospital in Mishawaka. She was a devoted and loving mother and grandmother who found great joy in caring for her family. Known for her thoughtful spirit, Margaret dedicated a room in her home to sending birthday, anniversary, wedding, and sympathy cards to all those she loved. Her favorite song, “Because He Lives” by Bill Gaither, reflected her strong Christian faith and was even set as the ringtone on her phone.
Margaret is survived by her daughter, Mariella (Keith) Mills; her son, Bill (Karen) Austin; her daughter-in-law, Rose Austin; her two grandchildren, Ryan, Ron Jacob; and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Ann Branson; along with Rebecca Sue (Mike) Miller of Hammond, Indiana; Connie Ann (John) Neace of Mishawaka; and John William (Cindy) Gunnett of Osceola.
A graveside memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, at 1:00 PM at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Garden of the Apostles, in Osceola, Indiana.
Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Osceola is entrusted with arrangements.
