Marian Mattie Humphrey, born October 24, 1923, made it to age 89, died March 13, 2013 of natural causes. She was preceded in death by her parents, Homer and Julia Biddle, her brother Willard, her sister Lillian Stoner and her loving husband Wilfrid Loyd Humphrey. Marian had four children, JoAnn, Edward, Christine and Ronald whom she loved fiercely and equally, all surviving. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren, Lisa Krieg and Larry Lemke, Aaron and Marcie Meehan, Che and Sy Humphrey, and 11 great-grandchildren. She lived a good life and had no regrets. Marian met Wilfred when he was playing piano with his brother Kenneth as MC on their popular radio program, The Hayloft Jamboree, which with another brother John they developed into another popular act, The Hicksville Nuts. Suffice it to say that Marian & Wilfrid had many good times often imbued with music. Marian and Wilfrid fulfilled their life dream of being on permanent vacation by relocating from South Bend, after the children had left, to a lakefront home on Driskell Lake in Jones, Michigan. When Wilfrid was a boy, his father Aloyisius would put the eight children on a buckboard drawn by a team of horses (which they kept in a barn behind their house on Miner St.) and travel 60 miles north to Lake Cora in Paw Paw Michigan for a two week vacation. Marian and Wilfrid continued the tradition with their children, sans the buckboard, and often joined by brothers and sisters with families. Though they both continued employment while living at the lake, being by the water every day, enjoying the sunrises and sunsets, with fishing and nature and recreation outside the front door, was like being in paradise. It was a beautiful life. Marian chose to be cremated and remains placed next to her husband. A memorial gathering for family and friends will be held from 4-8pm Wednesday March 20, 2013 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Hwy. Interment in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens will be private. The family''s preferred memorial is the Center for Hospice Care, 111 Sunnybrook Ct., South Bend, IN 46657.
