Mary Ann Murphy Dec. 30, 1932 - March 5, 2009 OSCEOLA - Mary Ann Murphy, 76, of Osceola, passed away on Thursday, March 5, after a faith-filled battle with ALS. Mary Ann was born in Springfield, Illinois, on December 30, 1932, the only child of Ralph and Kathleen Hansen. She attended Sacred Heart Academy and Marquette University. A talented musician, Mary Ann was a gold medalist in piano. She married Edward J. Murphy on June 19, 1954. They began married life in Taylorville, Illinois, later moving to South Bend when Ed became a law professor at the University of Notre Dame, and finally settling in Osceola where they raised their nine children. Mary Ann was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edward, son James, infant son Peter, and infant grandson Patrick Murphy. She is survived by her children Ann Manion (Daniel), Martin Murphy (Jane), John Murphy (fiance Christine Mast), Mary Hamann (Mike), Thomas Murphy (Barbara), Patrick Murphy (Tonia), Michael Murphy (Cheryl), and Stephen Murphy (Tina), and her daughter-in-law, Kim Murphy. She is also survived by 39 grandchildren: Mary, Katherine, Patrick, and Michael Manion; Timothy, Caroline, Edward (Ted), Matthew, Anthony, Paul, and Stephen Murphy; Ryan, Jason, and Kevin Murphy; Monica, Colleen, and Mitchell Murphy; Kate, Jacob, Nicholas (fiance Kelly Franco), and Peter Hamann; Kelly, Sean, Peter, and Megan Murphy; Eileen, Maria, Emily, and Margaret Murphy; Bonita, Jack, Jeff, Regina, Thomas, and Cecilia Murphy; and Edward, Michael, Jacob, and Mary Jo Murphy. A devoted mother, Mary Ann loved her children and her grandchildren, attending their activities and helping them grow in their faith. She enjoyed annual family vacations to Pokagon State Park, Holy Saturday roller skating, and treks to Shipshewana to hunt for bargains. Mary Ann loved traveling the world and was especially fond of Venice. Her hobbies included painting ceramics, building doll houses, and visiting with her book club friends. She never missed a birthday, Baptism, First Communion, or Confirmation, and logged countless hours on the sidelines watching her children and grandchildren play sports. Mary Ann was a devout Catholic and long-time parishioner at Queen of Peace Parish. After Ed''s death, Mary Ann was very involved in volunteering with organizations to support mothers and families, including the Women''s Care Center, St. Margaret''s House, Catholic Charities, and the Faith, Hope and Charity Chapel. Mary Ann wished to thank her dedicated caregivers (Charlene, Angel, Rose, Lisa, Virginia, Venus, Ann, Von, and Renee), who were like family to her. Visitation will be Tuesday, March 10, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Hwy., Osceola, with a rosary at 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, March 11, at 9:30 a.m. at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 4508 Vistula Rd., Mishawaka, with visitation one hour before Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Women''s Care Center or Queen of Peace Parish.
