Mary E. Stabnik, 83, of South Bend, passed away at 11:03 am, Saturday, February 5, 2011 in Memorial Hospital. Mary was born on October 26, 1927, the daughter of the late Howard and Grace D. (Roberts) Smith. On August 7, 1948, she married John Stabnik, Sr., who passed away on May 3, 1977. She is also preceded in death by brothers, Jim, Bob, and Don Smith and sisters, Treva Matthews and Clara Smith
She is survived by four children, John (Judy) Stabnik, Jr. of Granger, James (Vickie) Stabnik of South Bend, Norma (Wayne) Covyeou-Vanscoyk of South Bend and Kevin (Adele) Stabnik of South Bend; 7 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. She is also survived by four sisters, Eloise Templet of New Orleans, LA, Betty Stensland of Baltimore, MD, Margaret Smith of Chicago, IL and Juanita Nabulsi of Baltimore, MD and one brother, Fred (June) Smith of Iona, ID.
Mary worked for Notre Dame as a housekeeper for many years before her retirement in 1993. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Mishawaka and will be remembered for her love of gardening, cooking, and baking. She loved to crotchet and enjoyed being with her family.
Visitation will be held from 4:00-8:00 pm, Tuesday, February 8, 2011 in Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Highway, Osceola.
