ELKHART-Maurene Branscom, 94, passed away at Hubbard Hill Estates in Elkhart Wednesday morning. She was born to Samuel David Edwards and Mamie (White) Edwards in Clinton, Tennessee. They moved their family to Linton, Indiana, shortly after her birth. Maurene loved to read and learn. She graduated in 1940 from Linton-Stockton High School with honors. She lived with her aunt and uncle in Terre Haute for a short time after graduation. She then moved to Mishawaka where she worked at the Ball Band Plant making raincoats for soldiers during WWII. She married Charles A. Branscom in Mishawaka on October 11, 1945, after he returned home from serving as a pilot in the Army Air Corps during WWII. His family had also migrated from Linton to Mishawaka to find better jobs. The Branscom and Edwards families were close friends in Linton and ended up next door neighbors on Grove Street in Mishawaka. Charles and Maurene were married 62 years but knew each other their entire lives. Maurene was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a younger sister, Barbara Ann Edwards. She is survived by daughters Barbara (Bill) Myers and Nancy (Bruce) Darr both of Mishawaka; grandchildren: Jeff (Kristi) Myers of Middlebury, Mike (Nataline) Myers of Indianapolis, Brian (Erin) Darr of Cincinnati, Julie (Ty) Smith of Mishawaka; and four great-grandchildren: Emily and Hannah Smith of Mishawaka and Avery and Cooper Darr of Cincinnati; sister June Miller of Spencer, Indiana, and brother Clifford Edwards of Columbia City, Indiana, and sister-in-laws, Betty (Ron) Raab of Littleton, Colorado, and Gretchen Kyle of Columbia City, Indiana. Maurene was an avid reader of all subjects, but her favorite books were murder mysteries. She also loved doing jigsaw and crossword puzzles. Most of all, she loved her family - especially those grandchildren! Maurene's family would like to thank the entire staff of Hubbard Hill for the loving care it gave their mother for the past eight years. A special "thank you" goes to the Health Care Staff of Hubbard Hill, who not only patiently took care of their mother's needs with kindness and respect but were also a great support to Barbara and Nancy and their families through the years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research at P.O. Box 5014 Hagerstown, MD 21741-5014 or to the Hubbard Hill Estates Fund for the Angel Garden where Maurene and her daughters enjoyed many lovely walks - The Angel Garden at Hubbard Hill Estates, ATTN: Char Speicher, 28070 CR 24, Elkhart, IN 46517.
