Melvin L. Slisz, Sr, 78, of Mishawaka, passed away at 6:09 pm, Saturday, September 19, 2009 in Memorial Hospital, South Bend. Melvin, a lifelong South Bend/Mishawaka resident, was born to Clem and Gertrude Slisz on January 21, 1931. On November 30, 1949, he married Joan Simcox, who passed away on October 12, 1999. He is also preceded in death by a daughter, Deborah King, brother, Daniel Slisz and sister, Elaine DeCook.
He is survived by a son, Melvin (Jill) L. Slisz, Jr. of Osceola; three grandsons, Arthur (Katie) Holderman, III of Liscomb, IA, Daniel Slisz of Chicago, IL and Randal Slisz of South Bend; two great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Jeanie Mazurkiewicz and his dear friend, Mae Baird.
Mel was always known as a good guy, who seldom complained and never had a bad word to say about others. Mel was always active and liked to have a good time. He was an avid bowler; loved to sing karaoke, a passionate dancer, and enjoyed watching western movies. Mel was the kind of guy who always earned nicknames, including Popeye as a teenager, Hollywood at the bowling alleys and Melvis at the Elks Club after his karaoke debut. Mel retired from Bendix after many years of service.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Tuesday, September 22, 2009 in Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Highway, Osceola, with one hour of visitation prior to the service. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola
