Michael S. Hayes, 63, of Mishawaka, died Thursday September 3, 2015 at the Center for Hospice in South Bend. The Grand Rapids native was born May 6, 1952 to Jack & Pearl (Vandermeer) Hayes. Mike served in the US Marine Corps in the Vietnam War and was a member of the American Legion Post 161, the Vietnam Vets, the Marine Corps League and held life memberships in the VFW Post 360 and the DAV Post 19. He married Sharon Bradley in South Bend on August 12, 1992 and enjoyed his position as a journeyman in maintenance for Steel Warehouse in South Bend. He cherished the time spent with family & friends, and his dogs, Domino & Neiko. Under the skilled teaching of Grand Master Hong, Mike achieved his Black Belt in Habgido. He thoroughly enjoyed the neighborhood kids, taking groups to baseball games at Four Winds and loved teaching Taekwondo to the children, who fondly referred to him as Haraboji (meaning "Grandfather" in Korean). Mike joked that he was always "paying" Grandpa-mony, Uncle-mony or Dog-imony, and enjoyed every minute of it. Mike was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Michael Bradley. He is survived by Sharon Bradley-Hayes, his wife of 23 years; daughter, Nancy (Lance) Buss of Wakarusa; grandchildren, Ashley & Austin Buss; his siblings, Will (Wilma) Hayes, Tim (Adele) Hayes & Kellie (Dan) Leonard, all of Wyoming MI and his nieces & nephews. The family wishes to sincerely thank the nurses, staff members & sitters at Memorial Hospital as well as the nurses & staff members at Hospice House, for the kindness & care given to Mike. A Service of Remembrance is scheduled for 4:00 Sunday October 18, 2015 at the V.F.W.
