Nellie J. Bowers, age 81 of Mishawaka, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at Cardinal Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Nellie was born June 29, 1932 in Waterloo, Alabama to the late Patton and Madge (Carpenter) Young. On February 1, 1964, she married Hugh L. Bowers Sr. in Lapaz, Indiana. He preceded her in death, passing away in March of 2003.
Surviving are her children, Dawn Ward of Mishawaka, Patti (Rick) Balentine of South Bend, Cathy (Randy) Vutech of Winona Lake, and Hugh (Lourdes) Bowers Jr. of Dunlap. Also surviving is her brother Jerry (Connie) Young of Osceola, 10 grandchildren, and 13 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sons Gary and Larry Bowers, a sister, and a brother.
Visitation will be held Sunday, March 9, 2014 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home from 4-8 pm. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Monday, March 10, 2014 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, with interment to follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
Nellie was a waitress for many years at Eve''s Caf, the Toasty Shop, and the Thunderbird Caf before becoming a full time homemaker. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, and shopping. A long time member of the Apostolic Church, Nellie enjoyed singing in the choir. She also loved to cook for her family.
