Obituary

Norma Kathryn (Nickel) Deardorff, 99, of Goshen, passed away on Nov. 3, 2022 at Greencroft Healthcare.  She was born on June 18, 1923 in Mishawaka to Donald and Margaret (Carey) Weisweaver.

Norma is survived by her children: Martha (Dennis) Delio, Charles (MaryJo) Nickel and Robert (Kelley) ; Nickel; her step-sons, Craig (Judy) and James Deardorff; 14 grandchildren: Ann, Eric and Doug (Karyn) Delio, Matthew (Kristina), Beth (Ryan Fish), Ryne (Lyndsay Brown) and Christopher Nickel, Susan (Larry) Hakes, Michael Vrancks, Jerry Lee (Linda) Vrancks, Denise (Rob) Dresbach, Scott Deardorff, Derek (Michelle) Deardorff and David Deardorff; as well as 23 great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are 2 sisters-in-law, Dorothy VanDusen and Geraldine Toner.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, ElmerC. Nickel, in 1966; her second husband, Carl Deardorff, in 2005; a daughter, Kathryn Ann Vrancks, in 2012; a great-grandson, Alex Dias; her parents; and her siblings: Patricia Weisweaver, Marjorie Weisweaver Wagner and Robert Weisweaver.

Norma has lived in Mishawaka all of her life.  She attended Mishawaka High School, worked at Ball Band in Mishawaka and Pricketts Grocery store for many years.

She was a 50+ year member of Osceola United Methodist Church.  She had also been a member of the South Bend Avalon Grotto Auxiliary for many years.

Norma Married Elmer Charles Nickel on Oct. 1, 1943 in Mishawaka and was married until his death on Dec. 25, 1966.  She married Carl L. Deardorff on July 12, 1969 and was married until his death on Jan. 1, 2005.

She loved God, her family and many friends and they loved her.  She was always worried about others and their well-being over herself.  She cared for her mother for many years.  She was always helping her neighbors and friends until she finally reached an age that she would allow them to help her. She lived independently until age 93.  In her younger years she went on many fishing trips with her husband Elmer and later, with husband, Carl.  She helped cook many meals at the Avalon Grotto and volunteered at the Osceola Church as well.  She had a wonderful and healthy 99+ years of living.

Friends may visit with the family at 10 AM, prior to the funeral service at 11 AM Monday Nov. 7, 2022 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home 10776 McKinley Hwy., Osceola, IN 46561.  Pastor Leroy Wise will officiate.
