Obituary

Peggy A. Hertel of South Bend died Tuesday, December 13, 2022 in Saint Joseph Hospital. She was born on September 1, 1952 to the former Elaine Hartman and to the late Donald Hertel. She was a graduate of Penn High School and Ivy Tech. She retired three years ago from South Bend Water Works after working there for 30 years. Peggy is survived by her mother Elaine Rice, her daughter Jennifer Johnston (Nathan), granddaughter Kara Johnston, grandsons Nathan Johnston and Andrew Johnston, her great granddaughters Ella Johnston and Violet Johnston. Also surviving is her sister Linda Hertel Reed (Richard), Ronald Hertel (Maralee), Richard Hertel, two nieces, four nephews, one great niece, and two great nephews, an aunt, Lois Hartman, and many cousins. Peggy enjoyed spending time with family, playing cards, taking mini vacations, searching out information on her family history, and exploring the culture of the Native Americans. She also played coronet in her high school band achieving the honor of "First Chair". She spent many years as a Girl Scout and was especially fond of canoeing and camping, which she continued to enjoy as an adult. At summer camp to she was allowed to play taps over the intercom to signal days' end. Peggy had a kind, tender heart especially concerning children and her beloved cats. She will be greatly missed.
