Richard L. "Wonk" Brainerd, age 87 of Mishawaka passed away Sunday, February 8, 2015 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. Richard was born May 27, 1927 in South Bend, Indiana to the late Lawrence and Grace (Cole) Brainerd. On January 2, 1951, he married the former Ms. Patricia Schleifer. They recently celebrated 64 years of marriage.

Patricia survives, along with their sons, Steven (Patricia) Brainerd of Dallas, Texas and Thomas (Teresa) Brainerd of South Bend. Also surviving are three grandchildren; Natalie Payne, Phillip Brainerd and Hillary Brainerd, along with two great-grandchildren. Richard was preceded in death by his brother, George Brainerd.

Per Richard''s wishes, there will be no services. Chapel Hill Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Mr. Brainerd was employed for many years by the School City of Mishawaka, where he retired as the Superintendent of Schools at the age of 64. He was a long time member of the Kiwanis Club, enjoyed playing golf, traveling, and officiating High School and College basketball.

In his memory, donations may be made to the charity of the donor''s choice.
