Richard L Schaut, Sr., 82, passed away Friday, September 23, 2022 after an extended illness.  He was born January 11, 1940 in Mishawaka to August and Erma (Ranschaert) Schaut of Belgium.  He lived in the Michiana area his entire life.  He honored and served his country after high school.  He was honorably discharged from the Air Force after his service.  In 1963, he married Connie Rose Cole, who preceded him in death in 1988.  He worked most of his adult life at Wheelabrator Frye.  Richard was also preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Gerald and Charles Schaut.  He is survived by a sister, Sylvia Morrow; a son, Richard L. (Mary) Schaut, Jr. of St. Joseph, MI; daughters, Kathryn L. (Marc) Snyder of Mishawaka and Elizabeth A. (Tony) Waletzko of South Bend.  Many grandchildren, great-grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews survive.

Richard enjoyed many things in life including camping, fishing, bowling, gardening and crossword puzzles.  He delighted in making people laugh at his jokes and enjoyed beating a worthy challenger at a game of chess.  Per his wishes, there will be no services.  The family would like to thank the staff at Memorial Hospital, as well as Heart to Heart Hospice of Mishawaka for their gentle care of Richard.  We are forever grateful.  A private Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
