Rev. Robert R. Burkhardt, 89, of Mishawaka, died Wednesday at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center. The Chicago native was born April 15, 1923, served proudly in the US Army durimng WWII, achieving the rank for 2nd Lieutenant, graduated with a degree from Wheaton College''s School of Theology in 1951 and married Ruth J. Kleyn in Muskegon MI on May 5, 1956. Rev. Burkhardt served at Community Bible Church in Berwyn IL, Bethel Memorial Church in Princeton IN and Faith Bible Church in Granger. He assisted at Peoples Church in South Bend and also served as a Chaplain with the Salvation Army. "Bob knew the Lord as his personal Savior and is now in His presence." He was preceded in death by his brothers, Charles & Walter; sister, Charlotte and grandchildren, Bradley & Cole. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Ruth J. Burkhardt; son, Terry Burkhardt of Tampa FL, daughter, Cheryl (Carl) Doolin of Mishawaka, son, Randal (Diane) Burkhardt of Elkhart, daughter, Shaun (Jeff) Clanton of Indianapolis; six grandchildren, Kristin, Heidi, Brandon, Christopher, Jocelyn and Joel; his great-grandson, Landon and sisters-in-law, Lois (Tom) Donaldson in California and Pat Burkhardt of Chicago. Funeral Services 2:00pm Saturday January 26, 2013 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Hwy, with military honors immediately following the service. Friends may call on Saturday from 12-2pm.
