Obituary

Robert Duncan McPhee, age 86, of Elkhart passed away on Monday, March 7, 2016 at Sprenger Healthcare at 3:55 AM. Due to the Depression, his Canadian parents, Stanley and Ethel (Cooper) McPhee we temporarily relocated to Detroit, Michigan for employment and Robert was born February 2, 1930 in the United States. Robert completed grade 8 and then was needed to help out on the farm. On July 7, 1950, Robert married Florence McLeod in the United Church in Ontario, Canada. She survives. He worked at Algoma Steel Plant; was a logger, carpenter, and a trail guide while living in his homeland of Ontario, Canada. His passion was hunting, trapping, fishing, and gardening. He was a licensed taxidermist and a skilled carpenter. While guiding tourist from the USA, Robert met Harold Verkler who offered him employment with his construction company in South Bend, Indiana. Robert accepted the offer and moved his family to Elkhart, Indiana. He retired as a truck driver from Domore Office Furniture Corporation. He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene and the Northside Church of the Nazarene and the Scottish Cultural Society. He loved to serve the Lord for others through mission work in the USA and abroad using his carpentry skills. Along with the mission work, he left a legacy of outdoor survival for his grandchildren. Robert delivered Meals on Wheels for 20 years. Robert is survived by his wife, Florence; his children, Patrick (Rita) McPhee, Brenda (Tom) McCuddy, Carla Kelly and her companion Rodd Reinoehl all of Elkhart; seven grandchildren, Jeanna (Justin) Geddes, Jamie (Steve) Haitsma, Justin (Fianc'' Michelle Kistler), Rich (Lisa) McPhee, Laurie (Matt) LaFree all of Elkhart, Jared (Holly) Kelley of San Diego, CA, and Heather (James Mobus of Monrovia, CA; fifteen great grandchildren; two sisters, Lois (late Herb) McLeod, and Myrna (late Ed) Mateson of Sault Ste Marie, Ontario, Canada. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Donald McPhee; and his son-in-law, Joe Kelley. Friends and family will be received Friday, March 11, 2016 from 12-2 PM at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Highway, Osceola, IN 46561 with the funeral service beginning at 2 PM. Pastor Tim Sheets will be officiating. Burial will follow the service at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
