Robert D. "RD" Smith, age 93 of Osceola, passed away Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at Hubbard Hill Estates. Robert was born March 5, 1920 to the late John M. and Ena (Painter) Smith in Lynchburg, Tennessee. On January 9, 1941, he married the former Ms. Evelyn Lackey in Tennessee.

Evelyn survives, along with their children, Linda (Dale) Miller of Elkhart, Bill (Barbara) Smith of Haines City, FL, Cecil (Karen) Smith of Osceola, Ron (Joydeen) Smith of Elkhart, and Randy (Linda) Smith of Osceola. Robert is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 7 brothers and 3 sisters.

Visitation will be held from 9am- 12:00pm Monday, May 20, 2013 with funeral services to follow at 12:00 pm at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Osceola. Interment will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.

Robert was employed by Studebaker in South Bend for several years, and then with Dodge Manufacturing in Mishawaka for 27 years until his retirement in 1982. While employed, he was a longtime member of the United Steel Workers Union. Robert was a hard worker who enjoyed working in his vegetable garden. He and his wife spent many winters in Florida before returning home in 2004.

In his memory, contributions may be made to St. Jude''s Children''s Research Hospital.
