Obituary

Ronald Leroy Holbert, 84, a loving husband, proud veteran, and devoted snowbird, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2025, surrounded by his beloved family and his pet Sophie by his side.

Born on April 15, 1941, in Mishawaka, Indiana, Ronald was the son of the late William and Myrtle (Barley) Holbert. He was a member of the first graduating class of Penn High School in 1960. In October 1966, Ronald proudly enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served honorably until October 1968.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Rex Holbert, and brother-in-law, Jim Funk.

On November 7, 1969, Ronald married the love of his life, Sally (Lawrence), at Sunnysouth Presbyterian Church in South Bend. He worked for many years at Kessington Machine Shop in Elkhart, retiring in 2003.

Ronald enjoyed life's quiet pleasures—especially playing Sudoku and spending winters with Sally as snowbirds in Boynton Beach, Florida, camping, gardening and woodworking was his creative passion.

He is survived by his cherished wife of nearly 56 years, Sally, and their son, Lawrence Holbert. He also leaves behind two adored grandchildren, Sadie Holbert (Broc Smith) and William Holbert (Brooke Morgan), both of Denver, Colorado. Ronald is also survived by his brother, Lee Holbert of Fort Myers, FL; sister-in-law, Andrea Holbert of Mishawaka; and sisters, Betty Funk of South Bend and Verna (Richard) Smethers of Osceola.

Family and friends are invited to gather on Wednesday, September 24th, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Chapel Hill Funeral Home, with a funeral service at 12:00 PM, officiated by Reverend Greg Crump.
