Obituary

Mishawaka - Sadie B. Jones, age 92, passed away at Heritage Point Senior Living on December 31, 2022. Sadie was born on April 25, 1930 in Wishaw, Lanarkshire, Scotland, the daughter of James Morrow and Florence Brooks Morrow. Sadie finished high school and went further in training for Secretarial Work, at Whiteley Business Training College in Glasgow, Scotland where they taught shorthand, typewriting and bookkeeping.

Sadie was just 21 years old in May 1951, when she boarded the Queen Mary and sailed to New York to meet her betrothed , Donald Ross Brockie. They were married September 29, 1951 and both of them immigrated from Scotland and made their home in Mishawaka, Indiana. He preceded her in death, April 1984. During their life together they owned The Scottish Highland Gift Shop in downtown Mishawaka where they imported goods and specialty items from Scotland. They were active members of the Maranatha Baptist Church. They adopted two children, a son Donald and daughter Elaine while raising this growing family in Mishawaka. She later married Robert Jones September 24, 1988. He preceded her in death in 1991.

Sadie's first job in the area was at Wheelabrator Manufacturing in Mishawaka and later she worked at Zion Community Church as a secretary. Her other places of employment included Avanti Motors, Mishawaka Brass, AM General along with the Adult Continuing education Department at Bethel College. Later in life, Sadie worked part-time as Church secretary at the Gospel Center Church in South Bend where she was a member beginning in 1991. Once retired, she held many volunteer jobs with Real Services, The Red Cross and even found time to be a mentor at Nuner Elementary School in South Bend for several years. Sadie found joy in helping others and being of service. Her faith and joy in Christ was shown throughout her life. She was willing to take on any tasks the church she belonged to, such as Sunday School teacher and positions on planning committees and boards. She enjoyed traveling and visiting her homeland Scotland on several occasions. Sadie was also a breast cancer survivor and she gave back her support to other women in need.

Sadie is survived by her son Donald Iain Brockie of Osceola and her daughter Joyce Elaine Diedrich of Chicago, five grandchildren Janessa (Colin) Burns; Kyle (Heather) Fortlander; Sarah Brockie, Heather Brockie; David (Constance) Berta and 13 great grandchildren; her sisters, Isabella Fairbairn of Wishaw, Lanarkshire, Scotland and Joyce (Victor) Schulz of Bloomington,IN. Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens & Funeral Home 10776 McKinley Hwy Osceola, IN. Visitation will be January 6, 2023 from 11:00 am to Noon, service following.
