ELKHART - Samuel passed away Tuesday evening at the Greenleaf Health facility in Elkhart. He was born to his parents Samuel A. and Esther Marie Nettro in Elkhart in 1920. After serving his country in the United States Navy, he met the love of his life Virginia M. Schenk and got married in November 30, 1946. He worked and retired from the Elkhart Brass Company in Elkhart Indiana. Samuel lived a full life in service to his country and to his family. He had served in the United States Navy in 1942 during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1942 as a First Class Seaman. While enlisted he earned commendations for his time spent in the Navy, earning one star for the Philippine Liberation, one star for his service in the European-African Theater, and five stars for his service in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He served his country on the USS Corry (463) and the USS Mansfield (DD 728). Samuel enjoyed spending time gardening, and admired red cars, and also spending time with his dogs, whom he truly loved but he was truly a Notre Dame fan. He also enjoyed sitting outside in the sun enjoying the breeze. Samuel is preceded in death by his wife of sixty eight years Virginia who passed January 31, 2015, his parents, and his brother Robert Nettro and he also has a brother Louis Ray Nettro . Surviving Samuel are his children Michael R. (Felicia) Nettro, John C. (Sue) Nettro, Sue Ann Nettro, nine grand children, sixteen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. A gathering of friends and family will be Saturday10:00am - 11:00am September 19,2015 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home 10776 McKinley Highway Osceola IN 46561 with a private funeral service following with full military honors. In lieu of flowers the families preferred memorials are the Elkhart Humane Society located at 54687 Co Rd 19, Bristol, IN 46507, and or the Elkhart Center for Hospice located at 22579 Old U.S. 20, Elkhart, IN 46516.
