Osceola – Shirley Ann Varda, 89, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2026, with her loving family by her side following a brief illness.
Shirley was born on November 5, 1936, to the late George and Mollie (Schriener) Dies. She met the love of her life, James Varda, and the two were united in marriage on February 7, 1959, at St. Bavo’s Church in Mishawaka, IN. Together they shared a devoted marriage and built a loving family.
In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, James; son-in-law, Todd Griffith; brother-in-law, Clyde Weaver; niece, Alicia Zeigler; and her nephew, Todd Dies.
She is survived by her son, Mark (Kim) Varda of Osceola; her daughter, Marcia Griffith of Northwood, Ohio; four grandchildren, Corbet Griffith (Dana Knoll), Rachel Griffith (Mike Ezra), Kristin (Justin) Frederick, and Kaylee Sell (Jacob Holowitz); and three great-grandchildren, Ava, Eric, and Jaxtin. She is also survived by her sisters, Geraldine “Toots” Weaver; Phyllis (Larry) Cleland; her brother George Dies Jr., along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Shirley worked at Sears Roebuck, Co. from 1980 to 2000. Shirley found great joy in her hobby club, where she enjoyed making crafts and sharing friendships. She was a devoted homemaker who took pride in caring for her family and was especially known for her delicious homemade pies. For 25 years, Shirley and James enjoyed spending their winters in Florida as snowbirds, creating many cherished memories together in the sunshine and warmth.
Shirley’s greatest happiness came from the time she spent with her family, and she will be remembered for her kindness, dedication, and the love she shared with those around her.
In accordance with her wishes, no public services will be held.
Chapel Hill Funeral Home, Osceola IN is entrusted with arrangements.
