IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Stanley Edward
Welter
February 2, 1935 – December 1, 2024
Stanley Edward Welter was born in Mishawaka, Indiana on February 2nd, 1935, to the late Albert Edward Welter and Marian (Schumaker) Welter. Stanley married the love of his life Joyce (Avery) Welter on July 12th, 1959. They made their home in South Bend.
After graduating from Mishawaka High School, Stanley served in the Navy aboard an ammunition ship in the Pacific Fleet during the final stages of the Korean War. Following his military service, he worked for 37 years as a Carman and Welder at the John Young rail yard in Elkhart, Indiana, as part of the Penn Central Railroad.
Upon retirement, Stanley and his wife, Joyce, spent many years in their home in Frostproof, Florida, enjoying their time as snowbirds. Surrounded by family and friends, they traveled on numerous cruises and embraced the freedom of retirement, relishing the warm sunshine and beautiful beaches.
Stanley was known in his community as a "Mr. Fix-it" who could repair almost anything. He enjoyed working with wood and metal, often taking on building projects for his family, friends, and church. A lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of South Bend, Stanley served on the Red Bud Board and the House Committee Board for many years, and he also ran the church's sound system.
Above all, Stanley was a devoted husband, loving father, and true friend. He cherished his family and embraced life with warmth and gratitude.
Stanley was preceded in death by his oldest brother, Jerry Welter, in 1986; his sister, Jean (Ray) Hart of North Canton, Ohio; his oldest son, John Leslie Welter, in 1999; and his beloved wife of 64 years, who passed away on February 15, 2023.
He is survived by his two children, Julie Welter Waggener of Oakland, Tennessee, and Steve Welter of Ft. Myers, Florida; his two grandchildren, Christopher Waggener of Austin, Texas, and Courtney Waggener Bohannon of Hallsville, Texas; his great-grandchild, Crimsyn Nichole Bohannon; his sister, Margie Kolbold of South Bend; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. A private family service will be held at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, 10776 McKinley Hwy, Osceola, IN 46561.
