Violet loved celebrating all Holidays with lots of decorations in every room of the house. She always made birthdays special and loved having her family with her on her birthday and Mother's Day. She loved receiving cards and kept every single one. Violet loved cooking and especially baking. We always got to choose the kind of birthday cake we wanted. German chocolate was her specialty. Many evenings she was up late at night baking cookies for us to take to school in the morning for our birthdays. At Christmas time (her favorite holiday) she made several kinds of cookies including homemade fudge. Cut out cookies with lots of frosting and sprinkles is a family tradition.
Violet loved playing cards and dancing, especially square dancing. She enjoyed being around people and made friends easily. She always had make-up on, hair done and her jewelry matching her outfit before going out of the house, even grocery shopping. Violet was a loving, caring, beautful women inside and out. Violet and Richard moved to Granger, IN. in 1968 where they built their first brand new home on Adams Rd. with 13 and a half acres she had plenty of room to grow her zinnas, roses and plenty of animals to keep us all busy.
She was a stay at home mom until 1968 when she went to work for the Penn-Harris-Madison school district in the cafeteria. She enjoyed being around the students and was a favorite to many of them. In 1981 she was employed by the University of Notre Dame custodial department then a supervisor of the womens dorms. Violet was adored by the students and faculaty and developed a love for Notre Dame football.
In 1985 she remarried Ronnie Newsom (deceased), who had 4 children, Amy (Walter)Grimes, Cindy (Joe) Mosier, Jeff (Cindy) Newsom, Eric (Lucienne) Newsom, who blessed them with 9 Grandchildren and 7 Great Grandchildren. Violet resided in her home after the death of her husband in August of 2017 until moving to Tanglewood Trace Independent Living in Mishawaka, IN. on February 2018. In the short amount of time living in Tanglewood she made many friends including their staff. She played Bingo and Uchre and enjoyed Saturday night movie night. She attended Sunday evening church services as she continued practicing her faith. She often had comforting conversations with Lay-Pastor Don and Barbara Hales about God and Heaven.
We were blessed beyond measure to be raised by such a strong, loving and caring mother. The family values of love for each other and love of life instilled in us will be her legacy and will carry on into many generations to come.
