Virgil F. Black, age 83, of South Bend, passed away Monday, June 13, 2011 at Ironwood Health and Rehabilitation Center of natural causes. Virgil was born November 3, 1927 in South Bend to the late William Cader and Minnie Elizabeth (Glosser) Black. Virgil was employed for over 45 years at Mayflower Auto Parts, before his retirement.
Surviving are his siblings, Clarence Black of South Bend, Robert C. Black of Silver Springs, Nevada, Donald E. Black and his wife Vicki of South Bend, Mary Tapp, Esther "Ruth" Bradley of South Bend, Virginia "Joyce" Young of South Bend, and Carol "Jean" Dunn of Mishawaka. Also surviving is his brother in law, Harold Johnson. Virgil was preceded in death by his brother, William "Ed" Black and his sister, Marjorie "June" Johnson.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 pm Friday, June 17, 2011 at Chapel Hill Funeral Home in Osceola. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, June 18, 2011 at Chapel Hill, and interment and military honors will be held at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens following the service.
Virgil was enlisted in the U.S. Army where he received a Purple Heart during the Korean War. He was proud to have served his country, and enjoyed watching movies about the Korean War. He also enjoyed working in his flower gardens, and spending time outdoors.
