Obituary

Wayne Henry Brenneman was ushered into heaven on Friday evening, October 10, after almost 91 years on this earth. Born to Herber and Elsie Brenneman in Lewellen, Nebraska, his family moved to Goshen, Indiana, when he was very young. He attended Fort Wayne Bible College where he met and married the love of his life, Hilda Warye. Wayne devoted the rest of his life to ministry, although his heart has always been in Nigeria, having served there for almost 20 years as a missionary with the United Missionary Society, now The Missionary Church. Stories of his life in Nigeria are chronicled in his two self-published books, Buy the Truthand Sell it Not, and A Heart for Nigeria: Stories from the Field. His writings were frequently published in denominational periodicals. Wayne obtained his Master of Divinity degree from Huntington College and pastored churches in Bluffton IN, Cleveland OH, and South Bend, as well as serving on the staff of St. Mark Missionary Church, Mishawaka. Wayne always enjoyed celebrating his heritage, the fact that his great grandfather Elder Daniel Brenneman was one of the founders of his denomination, first known as the Mennonite Brethren in Christ. In his later years you would find him in the stands cheering on the Bethel basketball team, or watching his favorite baseball team, the Chicago Cubs. And every morning began with a walk outside to get the newspaper and completing the crossword puzzle "in ink" (with some help from Google when stumped.) An avid gardener, he shared his huge backyard garden with the neighborhood ground hog. But best remembered is the precious time every morning with his beloved wife reading the Bible and praying together for the family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years and his five children: Don (Sharmin) Brenneman, Marion IN; Karen (Ron) Horgan, Black Mountain NC; John Brenneman, South Bend; Ruth (Rodney) Bell, Peoria IL; and Howard Brenneman, Michigan City IN. His grandchildren include Joanna Brenneman, Indianapolis; Mandy (Kevin) Stutts and Chris (Kelly) Horgan, of Katy TX; Casey Horgan, Houston TX; Kimber Brenneman, Chicago IL; Kevin Brenneman, South Bend; Brett Brenneman, Niles MI; Jared (Becky) Bell, Kernersville NC; Ken (Melissa) Bell, Virginia Beach VA; David (Katie) Bell, Peoria IL; Taylor (Steven) Burkholder and Jordan Brenneman, of Michigan City IN; as well as almost ten great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Stan (Shirley) Brenneman, Berne, IN sister in law, Betty Brenneman and Helen Harness of Franklin, TN, whom he raised like a sister. He is predceded in death by his parents, and siblings, Rev. Paul Brenneman, Verla Brenneman, and Ruth Fair-Meeks. His last days were spent at the Sunset House in Mishawaka where he was lovingly cared for by Gary and Melinda Firestone and staff. Visitation will be held from 5:00-8:00 pm, Monday, October 13, 2014 in Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Highway, Osceola. A Memorial Celebration will be held at 1:00 pm Tuesday, October 14, 2014 in St. Mark''s Missionary Church, 55240 Bittersweet Rd, Mishawaka with friends may visit one hour prior to the service.
