Wilbur Elijah Turner, Sr., passed away at 1:45 pm, Thursday, April 10, 2014. Wilbur was born on November 1, 1928, in Neelyville, MO, the son of the late Renus J. and Rena (Jones) Turner. On June 19, 1972, he married Ollie M. Smith. Wilbur proudly served his country during WWII in the U.S. Army from February 26, 1946 to February 14, 1947, when he was honorably discharged. Wilbur was very active in local politics and was a councilman at large in the 1970''s. He was also previously a precinct committeeman for 10 years. His memberships included United Democratic Club, former vice president of the Democratic Club, and South Bend Men''s Club. He was previously the chairman of the Deacon''s Board at New Hope MB Church and currently at Temple of God Missionary Baptist. Wilbur also coached little league baseball and loved to bowl. He was faithful to family, church, and his community before his health began to fail. He is survived by his wife, Ollie Turner of South Bend; two children, Wilbur E. Turner, Jr. of New Albany, IN and Tonda M. Turner of South Bend; four grandchildren, Shasda E. Turner, Whitney Turner, Chelsea Turner, and Kaitlynn Turner; and one great grandchild, Donyale James. He is also survived by two sisters, Ada Joyner and Fern Simmons, both of Huntsville, AL and five sister in laws, Elmenthel Moore of MS, Juanita Kyle of South Bend, Bernice Whitley of Kalamazoo, MI, Vernell Williams of Detroit, MI and Elvora Robinson of MS. He is preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Virginia Blue. Visitation will be held from 10:00-11:00 am, Thursday, April 17, 2014 in Sweet Home Ministries, 410 S. Taylor St., South Bend. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Thursday at the church. Pastor William Jones, of Temple of God Missionary Baptist, will officiate. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola.
