Obituary

Winford L. "Bill" Baize, 92, of Granger, passed away in the early morning hours of Sunday July 29, 2018. He was born in Linton, IN on February 19, 1926, the son of (the late) Leslie & Dovie (Hamlin) Baize. On July 10, 1943, he married June (Davis) Baize. At age 16, Bill moved to Mishawaka with his new wife to work for Ball Band Manufacturing Co. as a machine cutter until he enlisted in the Army in 1944. He served a a cook with the 1560 th Service Command Unit at Camp Atterbury. Honorably discharged in 1946, he returned to Mishawaka, resuming his job at Ball Band and also ran the Rose Bowling Lanes until 1954, when he went to work at Parkway Lanes. 3 years later, he would become the sole proprietor of that bowling alley. Bill had a passion for bowling which led to his later induction into both the men's and women's Hall of Fame for his many contributions to the game. He was a self-taught businessman and later acquired a second bowling alley, Jefferson Manor, which he restored to a flourishing business. Bill ran the bowling alleys well into his 80's, never missing a day. He will be greatly missed, not only for his passion for bowling but also as a man who dearly loved and was devoted to his family. In addition to his parents, Bill was also preceded in death by his son, Steven Baize, daughter, Judy Smith and his great-great grandson, William Henry Castellon. He is survived by June Baize, his wife of 75 years; daughters, Patricia Ann Baize of Mishawaka and Winnie Sue (Bill) Minor of St. Cloud FL; grandchildren, Mike Castellon, Sam Baize and Kris Smith, all of Mishawaka, Angela Burkhardt of Kalamazoo, Tonya (Joe) McGinnis of Gainesville FL, Gregg (Katie) Smith of Osceola and Todd Young of Jacksonville FL; brother, Donnie (Faith) Baize of Dugger IN; 9 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren. Funeral Services 10:00 Thursday August 2, 2018 in Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Hwy. Friend may call on Wednesday from 4-8pm in the funeral home. Interment in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
